TUTORIAL F. CONTACTS A. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS For installation of GenScn, 60 megabytes of free disk space is needed. To run GenScn, the following are necessary: - Windows 9x or Windows NT 4.0 or higher - 486 or greater processor, running at 50 megahertz or faster - 16 megabytes of memory - 60 megabytes of free disk space - display resolution of 1024x768 For optimal performance, the following are recommended: - Pentium processor, running at 200 megahertz or faster - 64 megabytes of memory - 100 megabytes of free disk space - display resolution of 1280x1024 - color printer B. DISTRIBUTION FILES The following two distribution files contain the files needed for a complete installation of GenScn. gscn1_0.exe - self-extracting executable of the GenScn software hspfhelp.exe - self-extracting executable of the full HSPF User's Manual in Windows help file format C. INSTALLING Installing GenScn ----------------- Note that if GenScn is to be installed on a server system, the person installing GenScn generally must have administrator rights. These instructions assume that you are installing the software in the directory c:\wrdapp, which we strongly recommend. You may use other directories or disk drives, but you must change each occurrence of "c:" and "\wrdapp" in all of the following instructions to the alternate location that you choose. 1. If a previous version of GenScn is already installed, remove it. Select Settings from the Start menu, select Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs and remove the existing GenScn. 2. Create a temporary directory named "temp" and move gscn1_0.exe into that directory. Double-click gscn1_0.exe to extract its contents. One of the extracted files will be the setup.exe program. 3. Double-click setup.exe to execute the GenScn installation program. A dialog box will appear with the instruction to close any other currently running applications. The directory in which GenScn will be installed, c:\wrdapp\GenScn1.0, is shown at the bottom of this dialog box. To specify a directory other than the default, click the Change Directory button before continuing with the installation. 3. After the GenScn installation program has completed execution, move the hspfhelp.exe file to the c:\wrdapp\GenScn1.0\doc directory and double-click hspfhelp.exe. After the two files contained in hspfhelp.exe are extracted, delete hspfhelp.exe. 4. Create a working directory in which to run GenScn, separate from the GenScn installation directory. In order to run GenScn so that it starts in that working directory, follow the steps below to modify the GenScn shortcut placed in the Start menu. a) Select Settings from the Start menu and then select Taskbar. Select the Start Menu Programs tab and click the Advanced button. b) Double-click the Programs folder in the right pane of the window displayed. Select GenScn and then select Properties from the File menu. Select the Shortcut tab and modify the Start in field to contain the full path name of the working directory. Click OK. 5. Place any existing project data files in subdirectories under the working directory. Delete all files in the "temp" directory. GenScn directory structure -------------------------- The following directory structure will be created within the directory c:\wrdapp (the contents of each directory are shown to the right): GenScn1.0 ; copy of this README file `-----bin ; files needed for execution `-----bin_data ; file required during execution `-----doc ; documentation files `-----data ; data for tutorial Notes: a) The documentation files genscn.hlp and hspfhelp.hlp found in c:\wrdapp\GenScn1.0\doc are Windows help files which are accessible from within GenScn through the Help menu and which can also be browsed separately by double-clicking genscn.hlp and hspfhelp.hlp. (If the file extension ".hlp" is not shown, double-click the files having icons of a book with a question mark on the cover.) b) It is recommended that no user files are kept in the GenScn1.0 directory structure. If you do plan to put files in the GenScn1.0 directory structure, do so only by creating subdirectories of GenScn1.0. Preparing for simultaneous use of GenScn by multiple users ---------------------------------------------------------- In order for multiple users to use GenScn simultaneously, multiple copies must be made of project data and different working directories must be used; follow the steps below. 1. Create separate working directories for each user. 2. In each user's working directory, from within Windows Explorer, select New and then Shortcut from the File menu. In the first dialog box displayed, enter in the Command line field the full pathname of the program executable, c:\wrdapp\GenScn1.0\bin\GenScn.exe. Click Next. Enter "GenScn" for the shortcut name and click Finish. With the new shortcut selected, select Properties from the File menu and modify the Start in field to contain the full path name of the user's working directory. 3. Create subdirectories for project data, as needed, under each working directory. D. RUNNING THE SOFTWARE After GenScn is properly installed as described above, it is run by selecting "GenScn" from the Start menu, or, if a shortcut has been placed in a separate working directory, by double-clicking that shortcut. Be sure that, whether GenScn is executed by selecting the "GenScn" shortcut from the Start menu or by double-clicking a shortcut in a separate working directory, that the Properties of the shortcut have been modified so that the Start in field of the Shortcut tab contains the full path name of a working directory separate from the location where GenScn is installed. See INSTALLING above. E. TUTORIAL A tutorial on using GenScn is presented in the report documenting GenScn and is also available from within GenScn by selecting Contents from the Help menu, selecting User's Guide, and then selecting Tutorial. The data for the tutorial is found in the GenScn1.0\data directory. Before stepping through the tutorial, copy the contents of the GenScn1.0\data directory to a "tutor" subdirectory in the working directory created as described under INSTALLING above; follow the steps below. 1. In Windows Explorer, select the GenScn1.0\data directory in the left pane so that its contents are displayed in the right pane. Choose Select All from the Edit menu, then choose Copy from the Edit menu. 2. Select the working directory in the left pane and select New and then Folder from the File menu. Type "tutor" followed by the Enter key to assign a name to the new directory. Double-click the tutor directory; the right pane should now be empty. Select Paste from the Edit menu. When opening the project data for the tutorial lessons, after selecting Open Project from the File menu, select the tutor directory and then select shena.sta. F.
